How to Start Nose Work Safely

A practical introduction to scent games, gradual difficulty, food safety, and supervision.

Dogs naturally use scent to explore their surroundings. A simple nose-work game asks a dog to find food or a toy by smell, providing a chance to make choices and solve an easy problem indoors or outside.

Begin with a reward in an obvious location and increase difficulty slowly. Keep sessions short enough that the dog remains interested. If the dog becomes worried, frustrated, or disengaged, make the next search easier or stop for a break. There is no reliable conversion such as a certain number of scent-work minutes equaling a fixed amount of walking.

Supervise paper cups, towels, boxes, and homemade equipment so they are not swallowed or shredded. Count food rewards as part of the dog's daily intake, especially when managing weight or allergies. Ask a veterinarian about suitable activity if injury, illness, or age limits the dog's movement.
